A soulful Ayurvedic guide for sunny Aussies and wintry Europeans
December arrives with its own flavour: nostalgia, chaos, hope, and that sparkle of “maybe next year I’ll finally get organised.”
In this guide, I’m sharing December Ayurveda rituals that help you pause, breathe, and realign — wherever you are in the world.
This month is nature’s gentle invitation to pause, breathe, and realign… even if your holiday to‑do list didn’t get the memo.
And whether you’re melting in the Australian heat or cocooning under European blankets, Ayurveda offers beautifully grounding ways to reflect, restore, and prepare for the fresh cycle ahead.
A Tale of Two Decembers
A few years ago, one of my European clients video‑called me in December. She appeared wrapped in three jumpers, sipping hot ginger chai, with a look of deep existential winter fatigue.
Meanwhile, I was sitting in shorts, eating watermelon, trying not to drip it onto my keyboard.
We both burst out laughing.
Same month. Completely different universe.
And yet, Ayurveda helps both hemispheres align with the same underlying rhythm: December is a time to slow down, digest (literally and emotionally), and reset intention.
Just as we digest food, Ayurveda teaches that we also need time to digest our experiences and emotions. I explore this more deeply in my article on Emotional Digestion in Ayurveda.
Ayurvedic Themes of December
- Reflection — Digesting the Year
In Ayurveda, digestion is more than food. It’s how we process emotions, conversations, surprises, and even the awkward bits. December invites us to metabolise the year.
- Sip a warm drink that matches your season:
• Europe: ginger, cinnamon, clove
• Australia: mint, lemon balm, hibiscus - Ask yourself: What nourished me? Where did I leak energy? What surprised me? What am I ready to release?
- Journal when your inner fire (agni) is stronger — late morning or early evening.
- Restoration — Giving Your Doshas a Holiday
Once reflection softens the edges of the year, the next step is restoration.
- Europe (Winter): sesame oil foot massage, spiced teas, soups and stews, slow bundled walks.
- Australia (Summer): coconut water, cucumber‑mint infusions, aloe vera, early morning walks, colourful light meals.
Wherever you are, restoration begins with gentleness — towards your body, your expectations, and your schedule.
Gentle support becomes especially important during seasonal transitions, when the body is naturally adapting to change. You can read more in Ayurveda Seasonal Transition: Supporting Emotional Balance Through Change.
- Preparing for the New Year — Creating Space
Ayurveda teaches that you can’t invite in the new until you’ve digested the old.
- Europe (Winter Reset): sip hot water, enjoy one simple meal, go to bed earlier.
- Australia (Summer Reset): cool with herbs, add fresh fruits and veggies, hydrate deeply, eat earlier dinners.
These small rituals clear the path for clarity, joy, and fresh beginnings.
A December Story
One December, I was juggling too many clients, two family Christmas events, and an inbox that looked like it might revolt. I told myself, “After the 25th, I’ll rest.”
Ayurveda just smiled knowingly.
By the 18th, exhaustion hit: Vata scattered, Pitta overheated, Kapha heavy. My body whispered: Stop. Restore. Re‑center.
So I cancelled everything unnecessary, brewed myself a warm herbal blend, and curled up on the couch… fan on full blast, hair blowing like I was in a budget shampoo commercial.
And then something unexpected became my lifeline: Yoga Nidra. Twenty minutes of lying down, doing absolutely nothing — and somehow becoming a better person.
By the New Year, I felt like I’d come home to myself.
When the nervous system has been carrying more than it can comfortably process, rest can feel surprisingly difficult. I explore this common pattern in Why You Feel Wired but Exhausted.
December Rituals (Simple + Powerful)
- The 6‑Minute Reset (hand on heart, breath, release, invite, sip)
- End‑of‑Year Digestive Reflection (ask yourself: what nourished me, what do I release, what do I invite?)
- Clear One Tiny Space (drawer, handbag, notes app)
- Daily Nervous‑System Softener (Yoga Nidra, breathwork, herbal drink, silence before bed)
- Gratitude Twist (thank one thing that didn’t go to plan for its wisdom)
Closing Blessing
Ayurveda teaches us that every cycle ends quietly, gently, almost imperceptibly. December is not a deadline. It’s a doorway.
Wherever you are — sweating or shivering — may this month invite you to reflect deeply, restore fully, and step into the New Year with softness, clarity, and a heart open to possibility.
With warmth, humour, and a whole lot of Ayurvedic love,
Ruth 💛
