5 Healthy-Licious Foods to Boost Your Immune System

There is no doubt that COVID-19 has quite a powerful impact on everybody`s daily life at the moment. The news is full of new cases popping up everywhere. Whole cities and countries are put into quarantine. Schools are closed, public events cancelled, toilet-paper, pasta, frozen- and tin-foods sold out, and the general advice is to avoid close contact with other humans. I get it that the virus is very scary, I really do. I mean it can kill. But so is the flu virus and we don`t react with such crazy panic-creating epidemical ways.

I wonder whether there is another way to go about this. I wonder whether there is more panic in the air than good for us. I wonder whether it would be far healthier to have a solid plan at hand on how to keep our bodies and minds as strong as possible during such viral attacking times. That is battle all that additional Corona stress with mind and soul calming yoga, meditation practices or other breathing techniques. I mean it is common knowledge that the more stressed we are, the more susceptible we are to illness. I would even boldly suggest to keep moving in fresh air instead of hiding away indoors to keep the whole pulmonary system strong and pumping. I am also voting for mindful loving contact with others – isn`t it especially now that a sympathetically, random smile from a loving soul can fill us with hope and do wonders? Friendly calm will always be a total superpower!!!!

I also vote for applying daily healing gratitude. It seems far more healthful to count our blessings and remind ourselves of all the good in our life than to fall into the vast depth of panicking scary mode. By all means, of course, we need to be more vigilant, but not only in terms of what and whom we touch but also in terms of how we keep nurturing our precious bodies. Keeping them hydrated with lots of fresh water might help to flush those scary Corona guys straight down into our stomachs where all the gastric acids can finish them off. Warming herbal infusions and broths might be similarly caring choices – apparently the intruders we are talking about are not very heat resistant.

And yes, of course I believe that there has never been a better time than now to put even more extra passion and care into nourishing our precious bodies with healthy-licious foods that actually boost our immunity, keeping us as strong as possible.

Just a thought. In any case, I feel it can`t hurt to know what to eat to fire up your own defense army.

  1. Foods that are rich in antioxidants especially those rich in the antioxidant flavonoid such as in raw cacao powder, green tea, blueberries, purple cabbage, apples, legumes …
  2. Foods that are high in vitamin C such as kiwi fruits, capsicums or bell peppers, broccoli, strawberries, sweet potatoes and citrus fruits …
  3. Raw, unsalted nuts and seeds that are high in vitamin E and zinc such as almonds, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, hemp seeds, pine nuts …
  4. Spices – fresh and dried – that have anti-inflammatory properties such as turmeric, garlic, ginger, cinnamon, clove, cayenne …
  5. Green leafy vegetables that are full of special chemical signals which our immune system uses to self-communicate such as spinach, kale, watercress, collard greens …

I am not suggesting not to be careful and to protect yourself in thoughtful, calm manners where you can. Washing your hands is always a great start. It looks like the Corona virus is especially long lasting on various surfaces. And of course, by all means especially those among us, who have already a weaker immunity should be more vigilant. But I am indicating that creating panic, isolation and hoarding vast amounts of imperishable foods, may not be the most powerful way to go about this and to stay healthy. To me if feels so much stronger, better and more productive to focus in a self-loving way on the things that we can control: clearly that is choosing love over fear, limiting negative thoughts and stress we put ourselves under; I also vote for mindful movement, health-boosting hydration and feeding ourselves with lots of nourishing, feel-well-goodness. While we are waiting for the virus to pass through our big, small world, we might as well, do what we can to have the most potent military-like network in our corner: a super strong immune system. Are you with me? Let`s fight the Coronavirus by being our best healthiest versions we possibly can!
